Dr. Simone Kortstee is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She provides neuropsychological, psycho-educational, and psychological assessments to children and adolescents, who present with learning, social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties. She has extensive experience in working with young clients with a variety of medical conditions that affect brain development or functioning, such as concussions, brain injuries, seizures, and genetic disorders. She also works with children and adolescents who do not have a medical condition. In addition, Dr. Kortstee provides psychological treatment to children and adolescents who are experiencing difficulties with anxiety, depression, and emotional or behavioural regulation.
In her work, Dr. Kortstee uses her knowledge of brain development and brain functioning to help children, adolescents and their parents understand why they are experiencing difficulties. Dr. Kortstee uses a warm and collaborative approach in working with children, adolescents and their families. She enjoys helping young people in finding their strengths and developing strategies to overcome their challenges. She is creative and always seeks to use the latest evidence-based practices in her work with them. Throughout the years, Dr. Kortstee has had extensive experience liaising and collaborating with schools in order to best implement the recommendations that stem from an assessment within the school environment.
She received her first training in clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology at the University of Tilburg in The Netherlands. Subsequently, she earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (Neuropsychology Track) in 1998 at the University of Windsor in Ontario. She has worked in a number of medical and mental health settings in The Netherlands, United States, and Canada. In Canada, she has worked on interprofessional teams at the Hospital for Sick Children and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, and since 2005 at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Other professional interests include the provision of clinical teaching and consultation, professional outreach to the primary care community, as well as the clinical training and supervision of psychology students and residents.
